Heaven doth with us as we with torches do,
Not light them for themselves; for if our virtues
Did not go forth of us, 'twere all alike
As if we had them not.
Measure for Measure, Act I, Scene 1
|Welcome to Artburns
What, you may ask, is Artburns? Artburns is a website which showcases artwork by myself (Susanna Burns) and by my parents (John and Irene Burns).
When my sister Emily was asked to think about a name for this website, she, without a moment's hesitation, blurted out "Artburns"! Well, we all immediately liked it, in part, I think, because we thought it was somehow appropriate that the name of the site should almost rhyme with heartburn. Since then, however, the name has acquired, for me, a significance best expressed by the above quote. Both my parents and I have not often shown our work; this website allows us to let our virtues shine forth.
The work you will see on this website is but a fraction of that produced by each artist. Please come back often to see new works on exhibit.
If you would like to receive a notice by email when new work is put on the site, sign up here.
Some of the work is available for shows and/or for sale. Some is not. Inquiries may be directed to Susanna Burns.
Irene Burns was born in Boston, MA in 1924. She is a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and taught drawing at the New England School of Art. She currently has a studio at historic Fenway Studios in Boston. She has participated in numerous open-studio events at Fenway Studios, and recently her work was on view at the Zullo Gallery in Medway, MA. Her body of work includes portraits, landscapes, book illustrations, and geometric designs and sculptures based on the equilateral triangle unit, all in a variety of media including oil, acrylic, casein, and charcoal.
John Burns was born in Boston, MA in 1917. A veteran of World War II, he attended Yale University and received his BFA in 1949. He taught the workshop "Technical Painting" (also known as "The Renaissance Workshop") at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts for over 35 years until his retirement in 1996 at the age of 78. This workshop trained students in a variety of media, including egg tempera, oil, fresco, mosaic, and gold leaf. He currently lives and works in his home. His work depicts subjective reality in egg tempera and oil, drawings, and carvings in wood.
Susanna Burns was born in Boston in 1953. She attended the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and has a degree in Theatrical Design, with a focus on costume. She currently lives and works in her home. Her body of work includes costume and fashion design and illustration, somewhat strange faces and figures, decorative patterns, and embroidered wall hangings.
